The Greatest Movie Decade
(According to Daily Grindhouse readers…)
Last week, we asked readers to tell us their favorite movie decade. There was a very clear winner–in fact, it wasn’t even close.
The 1970s.
That classic decade beat the rest of the pack by more than 50%. And readers who voted for the 1970s were also the most passionate in their responses. Take this comment, for instance:
“Think of these directors and their films - Cronenberg's SHIVERS/THEY CAME FROM WITHIN, Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD AND THE CRAZIES, Craven's LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, Carpenter's HALLOWEEN, Cohen's IT'S ALIVE, Clark's CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS and DEATH DREAM, plus LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH, LEMORA LADY DRACULA, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, lots more. And from abroad THE BLIND DEAD, SUSPIRA, LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE, way too many to list.”
Can’t disagree with that. The 70s oozed with masterpieces. The 80s and 90s tied for Second Place. Makes sense. Our most-clicked articles last week were about 80s icon Val Kilmer and the 90s Ninja Turtle movie. But there were also votes for the 1960s, 2000s, and even the present day as the best movie decade.
What does it all mean?
Nostalgia’s a heavy drug. But also…it speaks to the massive impact of 1970s cinema. It tells us Daily Grindhouse’s readership spans generations (which is very cool). And it probably means we all have more movies to catch up on than we realize.
It also raises a question: Will we ever re-capture that 1970s cinematic spirit? Feel free to write us at [email protected] to let us know your thoughts.
In the meantime, we’re preparing a bombshell article on the totally unexpected and massive explosion of cult movies happening right now! Can’t wait to share it with you.
Outro:
In books, we are reading Lorne by Susan Morrison. Lorne Michaels is probably evil on the whole, but he’s done lots of good things too. He gave us Conan! That’s got to count for a lot.
