DAILY GRINDHOUSE FEATURE ARTICLE

TALK TO ME was a horror sensation in 2024. Brought to us by writers and directors Michael Philippou and Danny Philippou. TALK TO ME brought us a harrowing look at what grief can cost someone when they can't let go. This is echoed in their newest offering, BRING HER BACK.

BRING HER BACK follows Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong) as they get put into the foster system after their father's death. While their new foster mother Laura (Sally Hawkins) favors Piper, she pushes Andy away, causing a traumatic rift that reminds him of his own issues with his late father.  Laura, on the other hand, is still grappling with the loss of her daughter, and the grief and desperation she falls into as a mother willing to do anything to bring her back.

 Anything.

While an obvious treatise on grief in the same vein as its predecessor, BRING HER BACK serves as an honest portrayal of what can happen when the system fails. Children are fed into the foster system around the world like livestock waiting to see if their new family will nurture them or consume them into their own darkness. And how many times as children have people tried to tell the truth about their lives only to be dismissed as troublemakers, liars, malcontents?

As with TALK TO MEBRING HER BACK has a level of acting that's incredible to behold between both veterans in the field and newcomer Sora. Sora in particular holds her own to the point where you couldn't tell that this is her first venture in front of the camera.  Sally Hawkins, however, hits a very different chord. So many people have only seen her as the protagonist from THE SHAPE OF WATER that seeing her not as a fantastical love interest can be jarring, but it only serves to increase the depth and impact of her performance. I only wish there was more to be said that wouldn't spoil the film entirely.

BRING HER BACK overall is a sobering, haunting treatise on the dark side of grief and the almost sociopathic lack of care that children in the system can experience. Trailer here.
